Clenbuterol: what’s the skinny?

Clenbuterol is commonly mistaken for a steroid but it’s actually not a steroid at all, although it does produce some of the same results.

This mysterious pill started life as an asthma medication, but it’s most commonly used today in the livestock industry.

All of the major anti-doping agencies list clenbuterol as a banned substance and any athletes caught using it are disqualified from competing and have their names dragged through the mud by the media.

You might have heard of clenbuterol back in 2010 when the Tour de France winner Alberto Contador was stripped of his victory after testing positive for it.

But what exactly is clenbuterol and why is it illegal?

Let’s dig a little deeper and find out.

Why is clenbuterol banned in boxing?

The boxing world was shocked in March 2018 When Canelo Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol. This illegal performance-enhancing drug was found in his system just 8 weeks before the middleweight boxer was due to fight Gennady Golovkin In Las Vegas.

Clenbuterol is banned in boxing and other competitive sports because it is perceived to give an unfair advantage.

Bodybuilders use it extensively because It improves the performance and physique of the athlete far more quickly than natural training can achieve.

It is therefore easy and incredibly tempting for athletes to abuse this drug.

What is clenbuterol?

Often mistaken for a steroid due to its similar ability to assist in the retaining of muscle mass; clenbuterol is actually a steroid-like chemical that was developed as an asthma treatment for horses.

It is often referred to by its abbreviation “clen”.

It was quickly discovered that one of the side effects of this medication was to retain muscle mass and minimise fat.

The drug was hastily adopted by the livestock industry in the late 1980’s. Where it was used to keep cattle and other animals destined for the food chain, lean and muscular.

Obviously, the less fat and leaner muscle tissue there is on an animal, the more that animal is worth.

Although many countries have banned its use, clenbuterol is still widely used throughout China and Mexico to increase livestock yields (this is why athletes who fail the drug test claim to have been unknowingly exposed to clenbuterol by eating contaminated meat).

The drug is extremely controversial due to the fact that people have started to use it as part of their bodybuilding and weight loss programmes.

What does clenbuterol do?

Heart stimulant.

Ever heard of a beta blocker? They are used to decrease heart activity in patients with angina or hypertension. Basically, they slow down your heart rate and reduce your blood pressure.

Clenbuterol is classified as a Beta-2-agonist, which basically means that it does the opposite of a beta blocker.

It speeds up your heart and increases your blood pressure. This is one of the reasons why it’s so dangerous.

Clenbuterol stimulates the heart and the nervous system in a similar way to amphetamines or epinephrine.

Of course, an elevated heart rate can increase energy and fat burning, but the downside is that it can also cause anxiety and nervousness.

It can also mess up your heart. Badly.

Metabolic stimulant.

Despite the very real danger of death, people still use clenbuterol because it not only does it allow you to retain muscle, but it is an extremely powerful weight loss drug. It speeds up your metabolism.

This aspect of the drug has made it a popular (and highly controversial) choice for people trying to lose weight.

People caught on to the use of the drug as a weight loss aid after it came out that it was adopted by several famous athletes and Hollywood celebrities. Checkout this NY Daily News article Hollywood’s dirty diet secret

The good news is that there are now safer clenbuterol based alternatives available (we will get to that shortly).

Why is clenbuterol illegal?

Clenbuterol is illegal because It kills people.

For example, a 28-year-old engineer and rugby player Freddie Dibben (who was perfectly fit and healthy) was found dead In February 2018 after taking clenbuterol.

It was never designed for human consumption. It was originally meant to treat asthmatic horses.

There is very little data available about the long-term effects of clenbuterol on humans. But we do know that it is a highly dangerous substance that should be avoided. It is banned in most countries for a reason!

Thankfully, there are now products on the market that are similar to clenbuterol, but that are designed for human consumption. These usually have names that sound quite similar to Clenbuterol, like Clenbutrol for example (they just took out the letter e).

These medications are much safer and I strongly suggest that you seek out those instead.

Clenbuterol benefits

It works. Maybe a little too well.

It’s a stimulant that put your metabolism into hyperspeed. It works in a similar way to amphetamines.

You can lose 3 to 4 pounds a week taking clenbuterol. It’s a highly effective weight loss drug that prevents fat accumulation and which works very quickly.

It increases the amount of oxygen and nutrients delivered to the muscles. Which means you can work out harder and longer.

It curbs your appetite, reducing hunger pangs.

The drug also increases strength and endurance and reduces muscle pain experienced during workouts.

It allows you to lose weight without losing muscle mass, which means your body will look more sculpted.

You can get these results by using clenbutrol (clenbuterol minus the e in the middle). Which is the recommended safer and legal version of this banned drug!

Clenbuterol side effects

This is an extremely dangerous substance with a lot of VERY serious side effects. What’s the worst that could happen? You could die!

Common side effects associated with clenbuterol include but are not limited to:

  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle cramps
  • High blood pressure
  • Palpitations
  • Cardiac hypertrophy (the enlargement of thickening of the heart muscle)
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Heart problems
  • Heart attack
  • Anxiety
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dry mouth
  • Overheating
  • Liver disease

Death can occur as a result of heart problems or a heart attack.

Pretty serious stuff isn’t it? Definitely best to stay away from it and try one of the safer legal alternatives like clenbutrol (notice that the letter e is missing? Check the spelling and stay safe!).

Clenbuterol bodybuilding

Some bodybuilders are willing to gamble with their lives. They find the extreme results they can get when taking clenbuterol worth the risk.

The reason that this drug is so irresistible for many bodybuilders and professional athletes is because it allows you to retain muscle mass at the same time as building strength.

When you factor in the weight loss benefits, this is a powerful combination.

Clenbuterol weight loss

Clenbuterol is an extremely powerful weight loss tool. It has been used in the past by celebrities who needed to drop weight fast.

Celebrities and high profile athletes don’t seem to mind that they are risking their lives.

Maybe they think that it’s worth the risk because they are under so much pressure. Or perhaps they just don’t fully understand what it is that they’re taking.

The fact is that clenbuterol is extremely dangerous and you can get results that are just as good by taking a legal alternative like clenbutrol.

Clenbuterol dosage

So how much do you take and how often?

There is no defined dosage amount. You can basically use it as and when you need to.

However, the most common way to take it is over a 2-week cycle.

You start off at 20 mcg on day one and work your way up (in increments of 20 mcg per day) so that by day 7 you would be taking 140 mcg.

During the second week you do the exact same thing but in reverse. Taking 20 mg less per day until you reached day 14. At which point the cycle is ended and you will need to take a break.

Competitive bodybuilders find that this is a good regimen for maximum benefits.

It’s always a good idea to start slow and build up. You should also get checked out by a medical professional before taking any performance-enhancing or weight loss drug.

What results can I expect?

Firstly weight loss. Most people are extremely pleased with the amount of weight they lose when taking clenbuterol.

As always it depends on your level of activity and your overall diet and lifestyle.

You should expect to see a noticeable decrease in weight after 2 weeks to one month.

Secondly, muscle definition and tone.

In addition to weight loss, you will also notice that your muscles look more defined and are generally more toned.

Again the degree to which you will experience this depends on how much you work out and your general lifestyle.

Thirdly, you should notice an increase in strength and energy. Clenbuterol makes you feel stronger and because it works like an amphetamine it gives you much more energy to burn during your workout.

The first two weeks:

Here’s an idea of what you might experience during the first two weeks of taking clenbuterol. I’m assuming that you’re eating well and training hard during this period.

First 3 days:

Your body gets rid of its excess water weight and you start to feel more energetic during training.

Day 3 to day 7:

Your metabolism goes into high gear. You find that you don’t feel like eating as much but you still have tons of energy during your workouts.

Day 8 to day 14:

You’re feeling pretty good because you lost some weight and are now starting to notice a slight increase in strength. You’ll feel good about the whole process and are motivated to continue your fitness journey.

Thank you for reading this article and as always, I wish you the best of luck with your future fitness.
